Endless Motions

Perhaps it’s a delicate set of features shielded by a sharp, tailored suit, or a gesture so feminine at heart that it is nearly impossible to lose in a masculine translation; as it may be all about an inborn gentleness that gets toughened up by bits and pieces of menswear inspiration, or a severe attitude tamed by the most beautiful expression. Endless motions get to be rewritten with Simon Ackerman behind the camera, as he appears ready to use powerful contrasts in order to fully disclose hidden emotions.

Cinematic in all of its confined sense of luxury, the reimagining of the dandy girl is never to be done without the imminent collision of past and present. Her timeless portrait, impeccably styled by Tracy Michael, talks just as much about today’s modern aesthetic, as it does about the brave women of yesterday, who understood men’s clothing better than men themselves.

With hair by Debbie Hancock and make-up by Jemma Venables, check the complete photo shoot by Simon Ackerman (www.simonackerman.co.uk) at the gallery.

A portrait of edginess - Sartorial Anagrams

With an easy sense of seduction photographer Simon Ackerman takes model Samara Martins and turns her into a fiery creature of beauty and allure. Combined with Martins’ soulful stare and exotic look, the punk infused styling by Andrew Clancy transforms her into a force to be reckoned with.

The fashion in this shoot has a modern patchwork style to it; focusing upon this and the contemporary jewelry accessories. The hair and make-up is worth calling attention upon: both are done in an exotic and sensual style. Make-up (done by Jen Evans) is heavy on the eyes and lips- jumping between looks of sexual seduction and playful innocence. Eye make-up is innovative in both the shades of colours used and the outlines created around the eyes. Hair (done by Jill Schanpp) goes from wild and tousled to smooth and elegant, defining each look as we move through the fashion shoot.

Black & white portraits of beauty in emotion: Empty Spaces

Photographer Simon Ackerman creates black and white portraits of fashion and form with these six fundamental depictions of beauty, sensuality, magnificence and compassion. Each image focuses on the natural glow and radiance that is given forth by model Shelby Benson.

Make-up, done by Jen Evans, is simple and refined – focusing on the organic outlines and feminine forms of Benson’s facial features: ample and sensuous lips compliment Benson’s dark and powerful eyes. Small touches of ring accessories add to the shoot’s femininity and delicacy. Ackerman uses his fashion shoots to focus on the detail and emotion of his subject matter, bringing out the not only the natural beauty that resides within, but also creating a platform for simple loveliness that has true and honest representation.

The girl’s got style: Rachel by Simon Ackerman

There’s a particular magic that’s formed at the place where two eras collide. Or in this case, three, if you count the here-and-now.

Combining contemporary youthfulness with retro ’70s-inspired glamour is a shoot by rising photographer Simon Ackerman, working with a creative team who turned a straightforward portrait of model Rachel Validum into a picture of freshness and strong femininity.

Hairstylist Jill Schnapp added her love of the “Deco Decadence” of the 1920s into the mix, merging an edgy pompadore with a textured side braid or coaxing two twirly pigtails out from under a chic black hat to create styles that borrow from multiple eras without subscribing specifically to any.

Makeup artist Crystal Watkins played perfectly to Rachel’s features and colouring, contrasting her velvety dark skin with the boldest red lipstick and adding a flick of black liner and white shimmer to her eyes.

The era collision of the ’20s and ’70s comes into play again in Amelia Schussler’s flirtatious styling: Deco-inspired jewels atop plunging necklines creating an element of night-time glamour, while a perfectly on-trend black and white patterned crop top paired with high-waisted black pants is the vision of what this ultra-cool, modern-day glamazon would wear during the daytime hours.

Envisioning world's end

Everyone has a different vision of what the end of the world might bring. Or, the dystopian landscape that might follow if our world hinges on the edges of destruction but we’re still around to see it, still around to fight for our own survival. That’s the more interesting vision, because the alternative is pure nothingness and little creativity can come from that.

On the eve of the predicted world’s end (or at least, the end of the Mayan calendar) we bring you another photographer’s musings on post apocalyptic dystopia. Simon Ackerman’s shoot doesn’t beat around the bush with its title, End of the World, telling us exactly what was playing on his mind when he shot it.

Set against London’s recognisable Battersea – an ideal location for this kind of vision – it’s styled by Joey Bevan to a mix of toughness and sportiness, functional and futurist aesthetics. If Mad Max were set in London, this is how it might look.

Summer in SoHo

Since my last trip to New York for fashion week I planned to pay another visit, this time shooting editorials and capturing more travel photos. During NYFW I didn't get to see a great deal of the city itself as I was shooting in runway venues during the daytime and editing back in the apartment late at night. So this trip there was more time for exploration.

Here are a few shots from my first editorial on the first Saturday of June with my new US team.
