New beauty story with Maddy Elmer at Storm
Two new images from my beauty story I shot at the Adrian Pini studio in Brent Cross in London on Sunday. Maddy was an excellent model and my first girl to test with at Storm Model Management. The makeup was done by Abbie Rose www.abbirosemakeup.co.uk and hair by Charlie Wilkinson www.charlieloveshair.com.
I used two different techniques for retouching these images both using dodge & burn and frequency separation in Photoshop.

Avatar image manipulation with Catherine McNeil
A little bit of fun with Photoshop turning Catherine McNeil into a Na'vi from Avatar. If there was a Pandora Fashion Week it might look a bit like this backstage.

Creative makeup with Shelby
My last blog entry for 2014 wrapping things up with another shoot I shot at the Makeup Forever Academy in Soho, NYC a few months back.
The first look kind of lent itself to a more classic almost epic fantasy kind of look. The rouge coloured top our model Shelby from MC2 matched her lip perfectly.
The 2nd look was an implied nude look with a mermaid inspiration. The amazing makeup and fake lashes complemented the hair and the lighting helped to give a nice soft glow on the skin. Another great image to work with in post production.

Creative Beauty with Marissa
Wrapping up my creative beauty work this year at the Makeup Forever Academy in Soho, here is a very vibrant spectrum of colours by makeup artist Jen Evans.
It's always nice to have work like this in Photoshop when you are retouching and can give the colours a nice boost. I find it's best not to overdue any colour enhancements as the image can end up looking a bit garish especially with bright reds.
This was one of the last looks we experimented with. It's great to start a shoot with a look that requires more natural makeup and the some goes for the hair, it's easier to build up on the looks as we go along. Depending on the type of story we're shooting the last look can end up quite crazy and in this instance Marissa our model was invited to trash the makeup.

Tribal photoshoot in Central Park
At the end of the summer, I shot a tribal makeup inspired editorial in Central Park. Abby Stahlschmidt from Silent Models was our model and had flown in all the way from Nashville, Tennessee to work with us.
We caught the golden hour for some beautiful natural light portraits and here are some of the results.

Backstage beauty with Josephine Skriver
Another favourite backstage to shoot in 2014, also at New York Fashion Week was the Zimmermann where I shot this portrait of Danish beauty Josephine Skriver. I loved the gold makeup look and the super big hooped earrings she was wearing as first look. Originally from Copenhagen, Denmark Josephine Skriver is one of the most stunning models I've shot to date. I originally took some backstage beauty shots of her at London Fashion Week in February 2011 when she was walking in the Jaeger London show.

Endless Motions
Perhaps it’s a delicate set of features shielded by a sharp, tailored suit, or a gesture so feminine at heart that it is nearly impossible to lose in a masculine translation; as it may be all about an inborn gentleness that gets toughened up by bits and pieces of menswear inspiration, or a severe attitude tamed by the most beautiful expression. Endless motions get to be rewritten with Simon Ackerman behind the camera, as he appears ready to use powerful contrasts in order to fully disclose hidden emotions.
Cinematic in all of its confined sense of luxury, the reimagining of the dandy girl is never to be done without the imminent collision of past and present. Her timeless portrait, impeccably styled by Tracy Michael, talks just as much about today’s modern aesthetic, as it does about the brave women of yesterday, who understood men’s clothing better than men themselves.
With hair by Debbie Hancock and make-up by Jemma Venables, check the complete photo shoot by Simon Ackerman (www.simonackerman.co.uk) at the gallery.

Fashion editorial with James Pitt
I had a afternoon out shooting at the gas works in Poole and around Bournemouth beach in England for my first male model shoot in some time. Model James was full of ideas and not afraid to jump over walls for the sake of creativity! Here are the first retouches from the shoot.

Photography in New York City
I previously posted some work on my blog during a 10 day stay in New York, which received some particularly great feedback. This summer is was lucky enough to leave England and jet off across the pond for a 90 day stay in the USA. A majority of my time was spent living in New York in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Since my first trips to the Big Apple last year in 2012 I discovered that NYC has an enormous wealth of interesting and beautiful things to photograph.
During my time living in NYC I shot many portfolio shoots with some amazingly talented creatives and we had a whole plethora of fantastic locations to choose from.
The first shot featuring the Empire State Building shot from the top of a high rise of apartments I was staying in on 6 ave and 24th Street in Manhattan about a block from Macey's. The model is Kelly Gray from MC2 Model Management.
The 2nd shot is from a half days shooting in Dumbo in Brooklyn. It was particularly tricky to get the shot as I we had to keep stopping for traffic, I was however really pleased with the final shots that we got from the shoot. The model is Caroline Thompson also from MC2.
Just before I left to fly to New York I was watching an episode of Doctor Who. It was the story Angels in Manhattan and it gave me a little bit of inspiration for a shoot in Central Park, two of which are below. There's a scene with Matt Smith sat on a rock reading a book in Central Park which is where the original idea was conceived. We shot in early July using available light and a 5 in 1 reflector, it just happened to be during a heatwave so between sessions my assistant had to shield model Guilia from the sun so she didn't break out in a sweat. We prepped at David Ryan salon in Hell's Kitchen which is where the book prop came from. It was a joke book of bad haircuts containing mullets and just general bad hair from the 1970's.
The hair was done by Jill Schnapp and the makeup by Jen Evans.
The image below was shot on location around Hell's Kitchen, this shot was taken next to the USS Intrepid which left for some interesting backdrops.
The hair was again done by Jill Schnapp and makeup by Courtney Culkin.
